B&Q wanted to develop a brownfield site on the A3 in New Malden. Retailers tend to have a potato print for new stores and favour black box solutions that exclude the environment. We proposed a radically different development that not only used 50% less land, but also generated residential and retail units.
We designed the retail environment from the inside out. We harnessed environmental systems to improve the comfort of customers because happy people linger longer and purchase more products. We inverted the conditioning strategy of the building by warming and cooling the space from the floor using renewable technologies. We opened up the roof to maximise natural north light, which delivered colour rendering properties normally reserved for art galleries. The client’s investment will minimise carbon emissions and maximise its financial sustainability.
