How to put a big retail shed into a conservation area?

Initial analysis assessed the nature of the site identifying two areas with different characters.

The concept for the development was to create a continuous built edge along the existing busy main road.

A brick screen wall provides a rhythm to the street and forms an enclosure around the car parking, retail unit and associated service yard. An imaginative re-positioning of the garden centre allowed the buildings to respond to the irregular site boundaries.

A terrace of one and two bedroom residential units conceal the rear of the Homebase store and car parking from the smaller scale residential street to the rear of the site.
