Black Architecture have been commissioned to design a series of SEND units across schools in Hertfordshire to provide specialist teaching spaces for primary age schoolchildren with special needs.
The programme repurposes vacant spaces within existing schools to create specific teaching environments for pupils with cognitional and learning difficulties. The classrooms have been analysed as part of the design development process to work with the building constraints and enable budgets to be focussed on delivering facilities for the children, rather than undertake unnecessary structural or services modifications.
Previous work undertaken by the practice on the county’s CLASP schools has provided a valuable insight into how the buildings are constructed and the complexities of adapting system built prefabricated structures.
