Both the Local Planning Authority in Broxbourne and County Council in Hertfordshire have approved plans for low carbon window upgrades to the listed Burleigh Primary School in Cheshunt.
As with Templewood in Welwyn Garden City, Burleigh is a unique post war example of a CLASP system-built school in Hertfordshire. Whilst displaying a number of common design features, the two schools differ in how the glazing has been set into the building facade. At Burleigh chamfered steel reveals surround the openings both inside and out, providing a distinct, crisp angled frame to the windows that has been captured in the photographs within the RIBA records library.
The replacement steel windows are designed to improve thermal efficiency and reduce overheating, whilst adopting the fine sightlines of the original fenestration. New ironmongery will also greatly enhance user control of the space.
