The start of refurbishment work on the grade II* listed Templewood School in Hertfordshire has moved forwards this month with the approval of planning conditions on this seminal CLASP system building.
As part of an ongoing programme of roof insulation and window upgrade works on listed school buildings across the county, Black Architecture have been engaged to undertake the detailed design of the building envelope and secure consent for sensitive changes to the building’s fabric. At Templewood this involves the replacement of steel Universal Range windows with Crittall double glazed units that respect the narrow sightlines of the original fenestration.
When Le Corbusier visited the school, he is quoted as saying ‘C’est jolie’ by Twentieth Century Society. The upgrades respect the architectural quality of the building retaining the beauty he witnessed when it opened.
