Specialist works have commenced at the Listed former Hale’s Grammar school in Hertford to dismantle and then rebuild a chimney on this historic 1600’s Stuart period building, to enable a new heating system flue to be installed.
Whilst the architectural works are limited for Black Architecture, the process to secure Listed Building Consent required the existing chimney to be surveyed from the access scaffold and detailed plans of the complex brickwork produced by our team. Heritage reports developed to support the application identified that the chimney had previously been reconstructed, with the most significant original fabric of the building unaffected by the works.
Now that the chimney has been carefully dismantled planning requires samples of replacement bricks and lime mortars to be produced for sign off by conservation officers. Once agreed, the structure can be returned to its former prominent status.
